Studio
We are a small design-based studio located on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
Matt Day Architects was established in 2007, under the direction of architect Matt Day, NSW architects registration No. 7748.
The practice specialises in creating high quality low-energy homes and small public buildings that are highly connected to nature, for people who appreciate :
- Simplicity
- Craftsmanship, and
- Innovation.
At Matt Day Architects, all of our work is informed by six practice values:
- Environment & Legacy
- Creativity & Knowledge
- Humility & Simplicity.
These values underpin our guiding principles, which provide a solid foundation for every design and building decision we make with our clients.
Our buildings connect people, environment and community, and foster a spirit of belonging.
We relish ecologically sustainable design challenges and constantly strive to reduce our impact on the planet, throughout the construction and operational stages of each project.
As a result, each building ages gracefully and creates a backdrop for lives rich with meaning.
We integrate imagination and knowledge to design inspired and intelligent solutions.
We combine poetic and pragmatic solutions to produce spaces that are innately functional, intrinsically comfortable and always delightful.
Across each day, season, and generation, our buildings adapt and endure.
Humility & Simplicity
We create low-energy homes that are highly connected to nature, for people who appreciate simplicity and craftsmanship.
Starting with honest and simple materials – and respecting existing structures and fabric – we collaborate with skilled builders and craftspeople to infuse magic into every detail.
Imbued with intention, our spaces provide elevated experiences, every day.

Matt Day
Matt graduated from Sydney University in 1997 with 2 Architecture degrees. Shortly afterwards, Matt moved to Denmark where he lived and worked for 7 years, before moving back to Sydney and establishing the practice.
Matt is committed to sustainable design: he has completed the Green Building Council Course, is a certified Passivhaus designer, and has taught sustainable design at the University of Sydney Masters of Architecture Program. He is an alumni of the Glenn Murcutt Masterclass.
Whilst in Denmark, Matt was the design and project architect for Asnaes Main Library and Cultural Centre. This building was the first Library in Denmark to be built to the new low energy consumption rules initiated by the Danish Government after they signed the Kyoto Agreement. Ensuring that a public building use less than 50% of the previous allowable limits of energy consumption was a great challenge and involved intensive design development with specialist professionals. Computer modelling was essential in ensuring the outcomes.
This methodology of working underpins all our current and future projects.
Matt had designed buildings in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Uganda, Japan and Australia, and this broad international experience has enhanced his belief that the local climate, culture and client are the key drivers for architecture. Therefore, true sustainability is generated first and foremost from a local climate-driven approach , not from internationally imported ideas. He embraces an architecture of crtitical regionalism.
